We conducted several measurements with
802.11a devices (indoor environment, Windows drivers). Early results shown that
17 Mbit/sec is the best user can get, using ad-hoc mode.
When operating in extremelly bad SNR conditions, 802.11a link fails, while 802.11b carries on providing a minimun connectivity.
